Edward Overton Doyle, Sr. was born in St. Mary's Colony, Bastrop County, Texas. In his pursuit for knowledge and love of learning he attended Wheatly High School in San Antonio, Texas, Prairie View University and Southwest Texas State University.

Edward married Rosa Lott in 1941 and to this union eight children were born.

As a civilian, Edward was sent to Kelly Fields Air Force Base, Tuskegee Alabama to help start the training program for the Tuskegee Airman Flight School. He went as a part of the "FORTY NINE PLUS ONE" (forty-nine men and one woman) civilian group. This was considered the top elite group of the country and they were an integral part of the "Tuskegee Airmen". Edward and family were there for three years.

Edward served his country in U.S. Navy and began instructing as early as 1945, at Bainbridge Naval Center where he taught remedial classes. His independence and leadership illustrated his supervisory ability. For fifteen years he supervised all personnel for Lott Lumber Co., negotiating all sub-contracting and securing all building permits.

Edward was the first black bailiff for the Austin Municipal Court system. In 1970, he became employed at Gary Job Corp Center in San Marcus, Texas. He worked as an instructor for three years then as exemplification of his supervisory capabilities, he became the Manager of Vocational Building Trades.

As co-owner of Doyle & Freeman Builders, Edward specialized in design, building, remodeling and repairs. Throughout the city many buildings you see are designed by Edward O. Doyle, Sr. Doyle & Freeman has provided building services for the past fifty years primarily to the East Austin Community.

Edward's awards and certificates are many. Recognition of his contributions have been acknowledged by the family, community, church, and civic organizations. He has given outstanding service in many areas. Some of his affiliations are: Deacon, Choir Member, Choir President for twenty years, St. Mary's Committee Member, Chairman of Trustee's for St. James, and a poet in his own rite.

Edward designed and built several churches in Austin. To name a few: Rehoboth Primitive Baptist Church, Del Valle Baptist Church, Union Hill Baptist Church and St. James Baptist Church, twice.

Edward has been a member of St. James for 50 plus years. He served as a Deacon, Chairman of Trustees, Executive Board and was a proud member of the B.W. McClendon "Golden Aires" Choir.

In 2000, the Lord called home his wife of 59 years, the late Rosa Doyle. Also preceding him in death are his two sons; Edward, Jr. and Robert, parents; Spencer and Pearl Doyle, and one brother; Johnny Doyle.

Edward leaves to cherish his precious memories, children Rosa Doyle; James Doyle (Sandra); Barbara Scott (Calvin), of Austin, Texas; Marilyn McKinley (Al) of Riverside, California, Odis Doyle (Lois) of Vernon, Florida, Earl Doyle of San Antonio, Texas; thirty grand children; sixty-five great-grand children, one great great-grand child and four sisters.
