OVERTON FAMILY DESCENDANTS

Welcome! Overtons

Hi. I'm Paul Randall Dickerson, grandson of Elmer Lee (nee Leander) Overton, who was born in Saline City, Clay County, Ind. about 1888. He married Zorada Moss of nearby Ashboro, Ind., and they had three daughters. In order of birth, they were Maxine, Rosemary (my mother) and Ruby.

I believe Elmer's parents were David Z.T. Overton and Sarah Diel Overton. I assume the Z.T. stood for Zachary Taylor.

I have seen Elmer listed in the 1900 census as being 12 years old and living with his parents and a few siblings. I have heard anecdotally that other siblings died in close order to one another from a childhood disease.

I live near Nashville, Tenn., and the first time I saw the portrait of Col. John Overton, who built Traveler's Rest, developed Memphis and helped get his friend Andrew Jackson elected president, my jaw dropped. The image bears a striking resemblance to my grandfather.

I hope something I've written here might prove helpful to other Overton descendents. I'm looking forward to mining this site to educate myself on the family.
